Most immersion heater faults are electrical, and they're usually quicker to fix than people expect.
Here is what we usually come accross and repair:
- Failed heating elements
This is the most common cause of no hot water, especially in hard water areas like ours, where limescale shortens element life. - Faulty thermostats
Water that's lukewarm, too hot, or keeps cutting out. - Immersion heaters that keep tripping

When only one of the "sink" or "bath" settings works. - Broken switches and timers

Signs your immersion heater needs looking at
- No hot water at all, or it runs out much faster than it used to
- The fuse box trips when the immersion is switched on
- Water that's scalding hot even at normal settings
- A burning smell or scorch marks around the switch
- Crackling or hissing sounds from the cylinder
If you notice a burning smell or scorch marks, switch the immersion off at the fuse box and give us a call as soon as you can

- Tell us what's going on. Call or WhatsApp us. If you can , include a photo of the cylinder and switch. We can often do a quick video call to get an idea of the fault first.

A few quick checks before you call
Some problems have a simple cause. These checks are safe to do yourself:
- Is the immersion switch on? Cylinders often live in cupboards, and it's easy for a box or a coat to knock the switch off.
- Has the fuse box tripped? Look for a switch in the "off" position and reset it. If it trips again straight away, leave it off and call us, because something is causing it.
- Is the timer set correctly? After a power cut, timers often lose their settings.
- Is the thermostat turned right down? Some people lower it to save energy and forget.
!Please don't remove the immersion heater cover yourself. There are live terminals underneath, and the water can be very hot.
Frequently asked questions
Why does my immersion heater keep tripping the electrics?
It's usually a failing heating element. As elements wear out, water can get inside and cause a small current leak, which trips your RCD. Less often it's damaged wiring or a faulty switch. Either way, it needs an electrician to test it properly.
Why is my immersion heater on but the water isn't hot?
The most likely cause is a failed element or a faulty thermostat. It's worth checking the thermostat setting and the timer first. If both are fine, the element has probably burnt out.
How long does an immersion heater element last?
It varies a lot with water hardness. Our area has very hard water, and limescale building up on the element makes it fail sooner. If yours keeps failing, ask us about a scale-resistant element.
Should my immersion heater be on all the time?
Usually not. It's cheaper to heat water on a timer, for when you need it. The exception is if you're on Economy 7, where it makes sense to heat the cylinder overnight on the cheaper rate.
Can you replace an immersion heater the same day?
In most cases, yes. We carry common elements and thermostats in the van, so most repairs are finished on the first visit.
