Our Outdoor Garden Lighting Services

We install all types of outdoor and garden lighting for domestic and commercial properties across South East London. Every installation is fully weatherproofed, Part P compliant, and certificated.

Security & Sensor Lights

Security lighting is one of the most effective deterrents against opportunistic burglary and vandalism. We install PIR (passive infrared) motion-sensor lights, dusk-to-dawn lights, and CCTV-linked floodlights that activate automatically when movement is detected.

  • SPIR floodlights for driveways, garages, and side passages
  • Dusk-to-dawn lights that activate automatically at nightfall
  • Twin-head and single-head LED floodlights — long life, low running costs
  • Positioned and angled to maximise coverage and avoid nuisance activation
  • All units fully IP-rated and weatherproofed to BS 7671 standards

Installed correctly by a qualified electrician, sensor lighting is far more reliable  and legally compliant  than DIY plug-in alternatives.
We supply and fit, or fit supply-only units you provide.

Path, Driveway & Patio Lighting

Pathway and patio lighting transforms the look of your outdoor space while making it safer to navigate at night. We install low-level bollard lights, recessed ground spotlights, and overhead patio lanterns that blend seamlessly into your garden design.

  • Low-level LED bollard lights for pathways and garden borders
  • Recessed ground-level spotlights for driveways and patios
  • Overhead patio string lighting and lanterns wired to a weatherproof switch
  • Step and deck lights for raised patios, terraces, and garden steps
  • Fully buried cable runs — no trip hazards, no surface conduit

All outdoor cable runs are installed underground in armoured cable or protective conduit, meeting UK wiring regulations and Part P Building Regulations. You won't see a cable once we're done.

Garden Feature & Uplighting

Uplighting and feature lighting turns your garden into a striking night-time space. We install directional spotlights that highlight trees, shrubs, walls, and architectural features — giving your outdoor space a professional finish that genuinely adds kerb appeal and property value.

  • Directional LED spike spotlights for trees and planting
  • Wall-mounted uplighters for fences, pergolas, and outbuildings
  • Colour-temperature options — warm white for welcoming ambience, cool white for a contemporary feel
  • Smart lighting compatibility — Philips Hue outdoor, Ring, and similar systems
  • Separate circuits with outdoor-rated switched spur for independent control

We work with your existing garden layout or alongside your landscaper to deliver a lighting scheme that suits your property. No design fee — we advise on the best approach during your free site visit.

What to Expect: Our Installation Process

Garden lighting installation with Excel Electricians is a straightforward, no-hassle process:

1

Free site visit and quote

We visit your property, discuss what you want to achieve, and advise on the best approach — number of lights, positions, switching options, and any trenching or cable routing required. No charge, no obligation.

2

Fixed quote agreed in writing

You receive a written quote before any work begins. The price covers labour, cable, fixings, and — unless you've chosen to supply your own fittings — the light units themselves. No extras on the day.

3

Installation day

We arrive on time, protect your property throughout, and complete all trenching, cabling, and fitting with minimal disruption. Most garden lighting installations are completed in a single day.

4

Testing and certification

Every new outdoor circuit is tested before we leave. Where required under Part P Building Regulations, we issue the relevant certificate — important for home insurance and future property sales.

5

Handover and walkthrough

We walk you through the system — how to adjust sensor sensitivity and timing, how to isolate the circuit if needed, and any maintenance tips. You're left confident in how everything works.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does outdoor garden lighting require Building Regulations approval (Part P)?

Yes, in most cases. Any new outdoor circuit, whether for security lights, path lighting, or feature lighting, is notifiable work under Part P of the Building Regulations. This means it must be carried out by a registered electrician (such as an NICEIC-approved contractor like Excel Electricians) who can self-certify the installation. If you use an unregistered electrician, the work must be inspected and certified by your local authority  which costs more and takes longer. All our outdoor lighting installations are Part P compliant and certificated.

How much does garden lighting installation cost in South East London?

Garden lighting costs vary depending on the number of lights, the type of fitting, and how much trenching or cable routing is required. As a guide: a basic security light installation (one or two PIR floodlights on an existing circuit) typically costs £150–£300 including labour. A full garden lighting scheme with path lights, feature uplighters, and a dedicated outdoor circuit starts from around £500–£900 for a typical SE London property. We provide free, no-obligation written quotes so you know the exact cost before we begin.

Can you install smart garden lighting (Philips Hue, Ring, etc.)?

Yes. We regularly install smart outdoor lighting systems including Philips Hue Outdoor, Ring floodlight cameras, and other app-controlled systems. We handle the electrical installation and weatherproofing — including the outdoor-rated switched spur and any new circuit required. You control the smart features through the manufacturer's app. If you already own smart fittings, we're happy to fit your supply.

What type of cable do you use for outdoor lighting?

All underground outdoor cable runs use steel wire armoured (SWA) cable, which is specifically rated for direct burial and provides mechanical protection against spades, forks, and ground movement. Above-ground outdoor cable is installed in weatherproof conduit or uses appropriately-rated flex. We never use standard indoor cable for outdoor runs — it degrades quickly and presents a safety risk.

How long does garden lighting installation take?

A standard garden lighting installation — covering one to three zones with security, path, and feature lighting — is typically completed in one day. Larger projects with extensive trenching, multiple circuits, or smart system integration may take two days. We'll give you a realistic timeframe when we quote.

Will you leave my garden tidy after installing underground cables?

Yes. We reinstate all trenches carefully, replace turf or paving where disturbed, and leave your garden in the same condition we found it. We take care of your property throughout — and that includes sweeping up and disposing of any waste.
